Roundup of the month: Sterling jewellery and January's Garnets

Garnet vermeil necklace

We've seen some beautiful sterling jewellery move through the shop this January, as the new year has started up in earnest. It always feels symbolic that as each year germinates, the birthstone of the month is the one named after the latin word for seed, 'granatus'. One of our favourite gemstones, garnet truly shares the deep red sheen of pomegranate seeds. It's easy to see how it gained its reputation as a stone of health and passion.

Our garnet vermeil necklance exaggerates the similarity, with its lengths of faceted stones culminating in an organically chaotic knot of chain and beads. Somehow the shape and colour always brings to my mind thin curls of pith and delectable trails of ripe seeds. Our sterling silver garnet flower pendant mimics another stage in the plant's lifecycle, its charming design making spring feel that little bit closer.

In our search for online gems of all kinds, we've amassed no small number of favourites worth sharing. For today, here are a few of the best songs by artists who share a name with the gemstone of the moment:

A real classic, well worth a listen with Valentine's Day on the way.

Moldovian violinist Ilian Garnet's stellar performance earned him third place in the 2009 Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition, though I can see why many wish he'd won outright.

Japanese pop/rock by a band who aspire to 'achieve a musical depth akin to the depth of the color red often found in garnets', which I'm inclined to say they've achieved.
